Otahuna was built in the nineteenth century for prominent parliamentarian and philanthropist Sir Heaton Rhodes. An enduring testament to his love for the finer things in life, the homestead is considered one of the best examples of ‘Queen Anne’ or ‘Arts and Crafts” style architecture in Australasia. The homestead retains many original decorative features including gingerbread mantlepieces, stained glass windows, 4-metre coffered ceilings and 15 wood-burning fireplaces including some in guest bedrooms and bathrooms. Outside, the 120-year old gardens offer panoramic vistas of the Southern Alps, formal beds with mature exotic trees, and hidden glades waiting to be discovered.
The Lodge offers a hosted environment with a dedicated staff working to create a number of personalised moments to delight guests. At dinner, guests may dine communally in the opulent formal dining room where ornate original wallpaper, a roaring fire and sparkling candlesticks exemplify the gracious living of the Victorian era. Alternatively, they may retreat to a private table for two in the sunken wine cellar, the intimate library, the drawing room turret, or a location of their choosing.
Lodge Facilities:
Otahuna Lodge offers 2 master suites and 5 suites which retain grand architectural features such as carved inglenooks, chimneypieces and stained glass windows. Though each accommodation offers its own distinct character, all of the rooms are decorated in a traditional English country style with classic furniture, elegant fabrics and individual pieces of commissioned art created by contemporary New Zealand artists. Each suite offers a sitting area or separate sitting room and each ensuite bathroom offers both a bathtub and a separate walk-in shower.
Otahuna Lodge is the ideal place from which to explore Canterbury and the Banks Peninsula. Wineries, private gardens, championship golf, world-class fishing, horseback riding, and even the world's rarest dolphins are all just a short drive-or helicopter ride-from the front door.
For those that stay closer to home, a cooking class with the executive chef is sure to evoke a sense of culibary adventure. Or perhaps a roaring fire in the library or a tour of the estate with the head gardener might present the perfect opportunity to while away an afternoon.
